On 15 January 2024, the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) officially handed over the Cape Town Campus to Rods Construction, marking the start of a critical refurbishment project.

The refurbishment project not only aims to preserve the heritage of this iconic building but also seeks to ensure a safer and more conductive environment for all stakeholders. This will ensure that the campus remains an inspiring space for future generations.

In the interim, the NLSA has made efforts to ensure that stakeholders still have access to the NLSA’s collection. Although services are limited, users are encouraged to book an appointment to access collections stored at Matrix House and Centre for the Book as well as for Legal Deposit submissions.

The Cape Town Campus holds immense historical and cultural value, and this refurbishment project is a vital investment on the future building. By restoring and upgrading this facility, we are not only preserving a significant heritage building but also enhancing the environment for our stakeholders. We look forward to the successful completion of the project and the positive impact it will have on our community.

As work progresses, the NLSA will keep its stakeholders informed about the developments of the project. The construction work includes the refurbishment of the roof and ablution facilities in order to enhance its functionality and construction is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
